DNN Blog

One of my favourite clients (he let me ride his new motor bike) created this comparison grid when they were deciding on a platform for the future. They chose DNN of course. This is the list of CMS's they investigated. AxCMS.net Cuyahoga DotNetNuke mojoPortal MOSS 2007 OXX Publisher 3 Powerslave ECMS QuickerSite Rainbow redcms(c) Sitecore V5 Smartsite CMS TrioVis.CMS umbraco VWD-CMS The table is very comprehensive and should serve you well when talking to your clients.

The package has now been released back into the tracker. It's odd how certain things crop up that you wouldn't have expected. So - our friends across the pond (from my perspective) have a different way of handling decimal points than myself. This came as no shock to me, but when running your code as a combination of JS from a remote server (in our case google), JS from the local server, SQL from the local server and VB.net on the local server, somehow it becomes as annoying as trying to handle the exchange rates...

The recent DotNetNuke OpenForce conference in Las Vegas provided some insight into some of the larger organizations who are actively using DotNetNuke.

I picked up the latest issue of MSDN magazine this evening and, as usual, opened it to the {End Bracket} column on the last page first. I like {End Bracket} because it usually contains an honest, focussed message from a random developer in the Microsoft development community. The title of the column this month, "You Should Learn SharePoint", caught my eye because not a day goes by without someone asking me whether they should choose DotNetNuke or SharePoint for their development project.

My standard answer...

I just noticed that if I create a new WAP Module in VS2008 and run it up I keep getting this error dialogue.

If I allow it to add the web.config it works but then I get the typical 2 web.config files error.  once its deleted the module works and debugs OK but it wont restart on the next F5.

Anybody got a solution for this?

After OpenForce '07 Lorraine and I went to New York, wow what a great city we had an amazing time and will definitely visit again.  We went to the Museum of Natural History to check out the dinosaurs and other exhibits and I found this cool clock that shows the different eons of time.  I love how the Precambrian era is the first of the defined ages of time and I think that the choice of "Cambrian" as the name of the next version of DNN is wonderful.

Thanx to everyone who came and said hi to me at openForce and were asking about my web farm project.  Well my IT gurus at Readify have got the OS installed so my next step is to hook them all together and get DNN 4.7 installed and start working on a test plan.  Thanx again for letting me know that people are interested in this side project.

I have been working with Web Application projects for about a year now and when I developed the new Authentication providers I created them as Web Application Projects.  I have also been using Visual Studio 2008 for a few months (since Beta 2 was released).

With the release of the RTM version yesterday, I downloaded the iso from MSDN and this morning I installed it on my Development Virtual Machine - (I use VmWare Workstation but thats another story for another day).

Once I had Visual Studio installed,...

The latest version of the Survey module allows you to export the Survey results. This worked fine until DNN 4.7. Now it throws:

Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException

The problem is that even though it is not suppose to be in an ASP.NET AJAX Update Panel, now it is (I think this was due to a Core change to fix another issue). The solution was to indicate that the Export link will now cause a post back:

Well I can say simply, OpenForce -07 was a great show! I'd like to start off by thanking everyone who attended, and especially to the team in control of the DNN portion of the conference. It was fun to finally meet everyone face to face - and well worth the trip. It was a huge success from the corporate sense also, and I've been working diligently to keep up with the traffic that has risen from the show.

As for the Map project - we made it a great way through the release tracker on the first go, but there...

The OpenForce conference was a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed meeting many of the community members who I have only known via the internet.  The only disappointment I had was that my session was not chosen to be video taped, for I am excited in sharing the information with the community members who could not attend.  All not lost, however, as I have posted my slides and code here.  It may be of particular interest to some that the download of the...

While DotNetNuke 4.4.x already validates emails in the user profile with a regular expression, this regular expression could not be changed by portal admins. In DNN 4.5, the regular expression used to validate email address can be altered in the User Settings Page (Admin > User Accounts > User Settings)

I'm just about over my jetlag and settling back into work at present, after a very enjoyable week in Las Vegas at the OpenForce conference. As always it's great to meet up with any of the other DotNetNuke developers, and finally put faces to some people I only know by email alias's.

However, one of the most enjoyable aspects of the conference was getting a chance to meet up with community members and see their enthusiasm for DotNetNuke and feeling reinvigorated by it. Volunteering on an opensource project...

For a long time now many skinners for DotNetNuke have felt like customizing individual menu items was like looking for the Holy Grail.  All the menus I have contributed to the community (Solpart and DNNMenu) have always had the ability to customize each menu item.  The problem always was how do we allow DotNetNuke the ability to customize the items?  The only place...

A quick update before I turn it in for the evening (really it is morning already). I've spent quite a bit of time on the Wiki module today, testing and debugging a few things.

The main focus today has been tweaking the ability to define some items to better improve SEO for the Wiki Pages. With the new functionality you can addTitle, Description, and Keywords to each Wiki topic, allowing you to define a different Title than than "Name" of the Wiki item. This title gets used in the Browser Title, as well...

WOW!!  How much fun was OpenForce '07?  This has been one fo the best conferences I have ever been to.  Its been awesome to meet face to face with a huge cross section of the DotNetNuke Community and finally put a bit more of a personality to the Forum posts, IM chats and emails.  Everyone I have met has been really cool to talk to and hang out with.

My session on Silverlight and DNN went over very well and I got lots of feedback saying it was enjoyable and informative.  Its a really exciting new technology...

I just posted a new tutorial explaining how to create a custom Silverlight control (click this link). While it is easier to create custom Silverlight controls using Silverlight 1.1, special alterations still have to be made to instantiate them properly when developing in DotNetNuke.

So I have just returned to Vancouver after a very successful OpenForce conference.  While I did attend a number of the other Open Force sessions I decided that it would be important in my role as "Senior Architect" to check out some of the other DevConnections sessions, especially in light of the "Cambrian" roadmap announced at the keynote.

Here are some highlights from my perspective.

I made sure to attend Jim Bonnie and Rob Connery's talk on using SubSonic for DotNetNuke modules.  This session was an Open Force session but I was really interested in SubSonic's potential as a Database agnostic solution to the DAL.  Rob Connery the lead of the Subsonic project, has recently been hired by Miscrosoft (see http://blog.wekeroad.com/2007/10/26/microsoft-subsonic-and-me/ ) to continue to work on this Open- Source (MPL licensed ORM project).  I have to admit it is quite tempting but I am not sure how it would integrate with the core....

Well it's hard to believe it is pretty much over! The last session for OpenForce07 ended just over two hours ago. The final session was good, and I believe it's going to be part of DotNetRocks as they were in there video taping it and Rich and Carl were up on stage with the DNN Corp guys.

The session was interesting, though it was more of a rehash of the keynote and various other announcements made this week. There was some interesting discussion and questions from the audience so I highly recommend checking...
